Description

Short description (about 40 words)

TRIONFI is a card game with the earliest tarot deck. Play trionfi — the 15th-century game the tarot was made for — with the Cary-Yale Visconti cards, rules rebuilt from historical sources and a museum of every card at the table.

Long description

Before tarot told fortunes, it was a game. In Milan around 1445, at the court of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti, painters gilded cards for a new game called trionfi — the game of triumphs and the ancestor of every tarot game played today.

TRIONFI seats you at the duke's table. The cards are the Cary-Yale Visconti tarocchi, one of the oldest tarot decks in the world, kept at Yale's Beinecke Library: the surviving cards come from scans of the originals, and the lost ones are labelled AI reconstructions. The rules are rebuilt from the earliest records and the work of historians of playing cards, and the rule book shows where each rule comes from.

Start with a quick duel that teaches the deck, then play trionfi in its Piedmont form of 1787 against lords of the court whose faces come from Pisanello's medals. Every trick tells you why it was won, and a museum at the table explains every card, face and object.
